1. LAV STAFF ATTORNEY

Location: Columbia, SC

The LAV Staff Attorney will be a full-time, salaried employee who works 37.5 hours per week and devotes 100% of his/her time to this Project.  This attorney will report directly to the LAV Project Director.  This position will assist with the creation and execution of victims’ rights enforcement training to victim service providers, law enforcement, and other community partners, and outreach efforts. The LAV Staff Attorney will also assist in the coordination a pro bono and contract (low bono) attorney program.  In addition, the LAV Staff Attorney will provide direct, holistic wraparound legal services to all crime victims including those victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, harassment, stalking, and human trafficking. The Staff Attorney will represent all victims in order of protection/restraining order hearings, family law, housing, employment, Title IX education issues (higher and lower education), victims’ rights, and other related civil legal matters. This position will focus on the underserved areas of the state, particularly the Lowcountry, western South Carolina, and coastal areas.

2. VICTIM ADVOCATE/PARALEGAL II

Location: Columbia, SC

The LAV Victim Advocate/Paralegal will be a full-time, salaried employee who works 37.5 hours per week and devotes 100% of his/her time to this Project.  This position will report to the LAV Staff Attorney.  This position will be primarily responsible for 1) providing client intake, victim service referrals and resources to clients and 2) serving as a paralegal on all legal cases handled by the Program Director and other attorneys. This position will also be responsible for court scheduling for pro and low bono attorneys and assisting the Attorney in maintaining client intake forms, client files, training evaluations, and client satisfaction forms. This position will focus on the underserved areas of the state, particularly the Lowcountry, western South Carolina, and coastal areas.

3. Bilingual Paralegal/Victim Advocate

Location: Columbia, SC

The Legal Assistance for Victims Program (LAV) Bilingual Paralegal/Victim Advocate will be a full-time, salaried employee who works 37.5 hours per week and devotes 100% of his/her time to this Project in the Columbia office. This position will report to the LAV Staff Attorney. This position will be primarily responsible for 1) providing client intake, victim service referrals and resources to clients and 2) serving as a paralegal on all legal cases handled by the Program Director and other attorneys. This position will also be responsible for court scheduling for pro and low bono attorneys and assisting the Attorney and Case Management Coordinator in maintaining client intake forms, client files, training evaluations, and client satisfaction forms

Qualifications and Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish

  • Experience with both civil and criminal matters

  • Knowledge of South Carolina’s criminal justice system, particularly from a crime victim’s standpoint

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse clients

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)

  • Familiarity with Box and Clio file management/storage systems


THE FOLLOWING THREE POSITIONS ARE FOR OUR NEW REACHING RURAL PROGRAM

Under the direction of the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network’s Legal Assistance for Victims program, the Reaching Rural project will address the substantial need for crime victims’ rights attorneys in many of the state’s rural counties with the goal of expanding legal access and services to crime victims in the targeted area of Beaufort County and the federally designated Promise Zone of South Carolina (Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties). Our objective is to ensure that victims of crime in these underserved areas are represented by excellent counsel familiar with victims and victims’ rights enforcement. Innovative uses of technology and cross program collaborations will enable Reaching Rural to increase the quantity and scope of holistic legal services to the area by connecting clients with SCVAN attorneys and pro bono and low bono attorneys statewide. Rural clients will be linked through remote assistance technology, including real time videoconference sessions, and physical roaming legal clinics organized at locations throughout the area.

4. SENIOR STAFF ATTORNEY

Office Location: Okatie, SC

Description: Reaching Rural’s Senior Staff Attorney is a full-time, salaried position who works 37.5 hours per week and devotes 100% of his/her time to this Project. This attorney will report directly to the Legal Assistance for Victims Program Director. The Senior Attorney is responsible for the oversight and management of the new Reaching Rural program under the direction and guidance of the LAV Director. The Senior Attorney will establish roaming legal clinics and outreach efforts; supervise the support staff; will provide direct legal services to crime victims in the targeted area (Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, & Jasper counties) both in person and through videoconference sessions; and will be responsible for the oversight of a comprehensive contract attorney initiative to involve private bar attorneys in victims’ rights enforcement on a pro or low bono basis. Additionally, the Senior Attorney will serve as a technical support resource for community partners, victim services providers, and law enforcement, as well as represent victims in order of protection/restraining order hearings, family law, housing, employment, Title IX education issues (higher and lower education), victims’ rights, and other related civil legal matters.

Key Duties:

• Maintaining the Reaching Rural program’s records and budget, ensuring compliance with grant guidelines, and reporting requirements

• Supervise program staff and operations

• Maintain a direct services caseload

• Appear in court on behalf of clients; draft and file pleadings, motions, and orders; conduct legal research and draft legal opinions; and handle appeals when necessary

• Provide technical assistance to South Carolina victim service providers and attorneys

• Attend local, statewide, and national trainings relating to legal services for victims of crime

• Supervise the program’s private bar involvement initiative


Requirements/ Qualifications:

• Licensed in SC

• Communicates effectively

• Possesses excellent written, verbal, and analytical skills

• Experience with both civil and criminal matters, 5+ years

• Knowledge of SC’s criminal justice system, particularly from a crime victim’s standpoint.

• Experience supervising staff

• Comfortable using technology and learning new programs to aid legal services

• Familiarity with Box and Clio file management/ storage systems

• Regional travel required

The Paralegal/Victim Advocate will be a full-time, salaried employee who works 37.5 hours per week and devotes 100% of his/her time to the Reaching Rural Project.  This position will report to the Reaching Rural Staff Attorneys. This position will be primarily responsible for serving as a paralegal on all legal cases handled by the staff attorneys, as well as serving as a victim advocate for clients. This position will also be responsible for court scheduling for pro and low bono attorneys and assisting the Staff Attorneys in maintaining client intake forms, client files, training evaluations, and client satisfaction forms.

Key Duties:

• Serve as a paralegal on all cases handled by the staff attorneys

• Serve as a victim advocate for clients

• Court scheduling for pro and low bono attorneys

Requirements/ Qualifications:
